The National Portrait Gallery: Permanent Collection of Notable Americans CD-ROM
This program runs in DOS mode. To ensure that the program will work properly, be sure to exit out of any open Windows applications before running it.
I. STARTING UP NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY:
To begin using the CD-ROM, follow these steps:
- Take the CD-ROM from its box and insert it into the CD carrier. Close the CD-carrier door by pressing the button located below and to the right of it. If you have any difficulties, please ask a staff member for help.
- To enter the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) program, click on Start. While continuing to press the mouse button, move the cursor arrow up the menu to Programs, over to the side menu and down to MS-DOS Prompt. When you release the mouse button, you will come to a C:\WINDOWS> prompt.
- At the prompt, type cd \npg. Press Return. Then type npg. Press Return. When the introductory screen comes up, press any key to continue (as stated at the bottom of the screen). You will now be at the Table of Contents screen.
- Now you can use the up and down arrows to highlight any one of the ten items in the list. (Press Return to select an item.) Each item allows you to search the data base in a particular way.
Please ask a staff member for assistance if you have trouble starting the CD-ROM.
II. USING NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY:
Command Line: After you have selected one of the ten items in the Table of Contents list and called up an image, you may want to perform various tasks (for example, zooming in on a portion of an image, searching, printing, setting up a personalized tour of various images of your choice, etc.) or move around elsewhere in the program. Simply call up Command Line (located at the top of the screen) by pressing Esc or *. This line contains the following functions (from left to right): Navigate, Search, Keyboard, Index (which is inoperative), Mark and File. Each of these functions has a sub-menu that contains its own special functions. Continue to use Esc or * to move back and forth from the Command Line to the images. (For further details on these functions, see the liner matter on the fold-out card in the CD's plastic jewel case.)
If more than one image of a particular subject exists, press Return. Each one will be displayed on the screen in succession. If you press Return and are sent back to the previous menu, you have seen all of the images of your chosen subject.
III. EXITING NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY AND REMOVING THE CD-ROM:
When you are ready to exit the program, go to File on the Command Line. Press Return. The first option in the list is Exit. Highlight it, press Return, and you will come to a C:\NPG> prompt. Type exit, and the program will close. Then remove the CD-ROM from the CD carrier by pressing the button below and to the right of the tray.
